Kite

17m low wind kite

Designers goals

The Turbine has proven that if you want to stay on the water and still have fun in 5-6 knots, your kite has to be light. We’ve had hard core freestyle riders like Eric Rienstra hitting kickers with next to no wind, riders in coastal swell shredding from dawn to dusk and local freeride guys who have the Gorge all to themselves long after everyone else has gone home - all on the Turbine.

Our progressive “Open Delta C” design geometry, makes it more efficient and faster in light wind much like a high performance glider or wind turbine wing, improving lift through kite speed and allowing the Turbine to fly farther forward in the window. In the wing tips, Free-Twist Tip Technology increases the narrow wind range of a large kites by positioning the bridal attachment points to let the wingtips freely pivot. This allows the trailing edge leech panel to open and twist when overpowered to prevent stall in light wind. The result is a lighter, faster feel with a wide apparent wind range and quick turning radius for such a large kite.

Kite review Slingshot Turbine 17m 2013

Test conditions

Wind: 7 - 16 knots

Water: flat

Board: Twintip 145x45

Conclusion:

The Turbine surpriced us! It was one of the best low end kites (only the Flysurfer 21m had a better score). Besides a good low end it scored great on its stability, depower, wind range and up wind abilities. We loved the kite in it's low end. Easy to handle and riding with 8 knots (flat water) Great kite for light wind use!

If the kite on it's back in the water or the canopy is wet and sticks on the water than the kite is hardly or not to relaunch (light wind conditions). Thats due to its big size and only 3 struts design.

As kiteboarding gear continues to improve and advance, light wind (10 - 15mph) sessions are becoming more and more accessible. One of the driving forces has been The Slingshot Turbine, which has been around for a few years and taken the REAL Lesson Center by storm. Our coaches report that the Turbine has transformed the way people are learning to kite - 13mph is now a dream scenario for new students to learn in. I agree with you - that sounds hard to believe. So I took the new 2013 Turbine for a test drive to find out more...
