Kite

Big air and race kite

Designers goals

The Draft is a high performance freeride kite that excels at hooked-in riding, hang time and racing. This state-of-the-art design has powerful lift for boosting big airs and long gliding jumps.
The Draft features a Static Bridle Platform. This eliminates the pulley and keeps the kite stable and driving forward for unrivaled windward performance and downwind speed. The Draft has five struts on the 7, 9 and 12 sizes for added control in strong winds and three struts on the 14 and 17 sizes for light wind performance and faster turning. Stability, high floating jumps, and speed are characteristics that define the Draft.

Features

  • Powerful lift for long gliding jumps
  • Static Bridle Platform for stability and forward drive
  • Excels at hooked-in riding, hang time and racing
  • Five struts on the 7, 9, 12 for windward performance in higher winds
  • Three struts on the 14, 17 for lightweight, light wind performance and faster turning

Octopus Inflation System

This proven, quick and easy single-point inflation system creates uniform pressure in the struts and leading edge. The Naish exclusive one-way internal valve ensures that the pressure in the struts does not change during turns.

draft solid frame kite contruction

Solid Frame Construction
Every strut is attached to a frame of heavy duty Dacron that is then sewn onto the canopy for unmatched resistance to wear and heavy loads.

light wind relaunch

Light Wind Relaunch
With all the new options available in light wind boards, riders are pushing the envelope of what is considered rideable. The new LWR (Light Wind Relaunch) gives the rider complete confidence when going out in the lightest of wind. This system lifts the wing tip independent of the rear leader line, and cups the trailing edge for instant relaunch. The LWR works when nothing else will.

Conclusion

A specialized big air kite! We experienced that the Draft is a real high flyer above 25 knots, in which the 9 meter version really comes into its element. The lift, but especially its float (glide phase) is a true joy in these conditions. Through a gradual lift, good stability and steady feedback through the bar, this kite still feels trustworthy in strong winds. In its low end, the 9m is more suitable for light weights below 70 kg, while heavier riders should probably look for the bigger sizes.

Specialized performance
The Draft is really a kite for more advanced riders and big air specialists. Tuning the bar takes some precision and the kite demands a well-developed kite feeling for optimal performance.

Target audience
Big air riders looking for a kite in +20/25 knots (dependent on rider weight)

Had a few session now on the 14m now and I am really enjoying its qualities more and more. At first I was a bit daunted by all the hype of what is this kite is about and a bit scared of keeping the kite sheeted in when jumping, the pull on the bar can be strong when a gust comes in and when jumping this thing will take you up! especially if you time it with a gust your are never gonna come done, amazing.
The hight end of the kite is very good lots of de power, i've used in 8 knots of wind up to 23 knots of wind where the kite really comes to life.
After a while I've got used to the pull of a train, i've started looking for gusts when jumping and every time it was pure joy, pure boost and hang time, even in light winds 8-12knots when most kites where struggling to stay up in the sky i was enjoying some boosting.
The shape of the kite long and thin, makes it fly really well in the window, generating power easily using the little wind available at its best. The kite hardly drops out of the sky even if jumping beneath it, it rather drops back in the window trying to sit on the trailing edge rather the fall out of the sky a pretty good thing if you'll try to relaunch the kite in sub 12 knots of wind.
Upwind performance needs no commenting as the kite literally pulls you upwind, beating everybody else on the tacking, the speed is impressive too and if you grind your teeth and hold on you'll accelerate faster than most leaving the others behind.
Catching a wave can still be possible, having three struts allows the kite to have some drift and the low tension line steering is, considering its size and build purpose, still acceptable.

This kite is free riding at its best, racing, old school boosting, jumping off a waves .

This 9m Draft is in my opinion a high performance, high wind Big Air kite!

What we like:
The draft has so much power in the last 6 – 10 inches as you sheet in up to the chicken loop. This means you can crank the bar in for extra speed or extra height when you want to and the extra power you get feels like no other kite we've tested. Nevertheless, it also felt very comfortable riding along with the bar sheeted out half way and you still have plenty of power and tension in the back lines.
When you do sheet the bar all the way in, there is definitely some solid bar pressure to let you know that you are really juicing the power out of this kite. Considering it’s aim of use (racing, boosting, speed) we would say that extra bar pressure is a good thing – it helps let you know where the kite is and adds some Va-Va-Voom to your session.

What we dont like:
The long shape of the Naish Draft and position of the steering line bridle (in the middle of the wingtip – see picture) makes this kite a little tricky to relaunch if you crash it straight down wind. Those of you experienced with the roll-it-on-its-back method of relaunch won’t have any trouble but it does take a little more than just pulling on one of the steering lines.

Why you want the Naish Draft:
Because you want to go faster, higher and harder than you have ever been before. Or because you want to be out riding in the lightest conditions (the larger sizes will be great light wind weapons). These kites generate a lot of their own power so even when you don’t feel powered standing on the land or when you first dive the kite – once you get going you have all the power you need.
