Lightwind kite with agility for easy kiteloops

Designers goals (manufacturer text)

The Riot XR3 LW (Light Wind Edition) allows you to enjoy even more days on the water. In addition to improved light wind performance the Riot XR3 LW stands for agility and pure ride joy, even when the wind is blowing at less than 10 knots.

The LW directly benefits from the new developments of its little brother, the Riot XR3: The new Short Bridle System allows for a very direct bar feeling and dynamic feedback when steering the kite. This enables real kite loops, which were previously unheard of during light wind sessions. The constant focus on light wind build methods gives the Riot XR3 LW its performance abilities in light wind conditions. Despite being as light as a feather the sophisticated construction allows the kite to hold its own when the wind picks up.

Features

  • Direct bar feeling with dynamic feedback when steering the kite
  • Crisp ride experience and real kiteloops in light wind
  • Applied lieght wind construction, thinner tubes and the new CoreTex® Light Canopy
  • Early planing ability and easy upwind ability at under 10 knots
  • Massive jump height and hang-time
  • Plenty of depower-reserve for strengthening wind
  • Thinner tubes and CoreTex® Light-Fabric

1 | Most direct bar feeling

The unique hollow Unibody construction reduces the weight by 43% whilst at the same time increasing the breaking load. The intelligent mass distribution and reduction of the mass moment of inertia (by 55%) enables a noticeably more direct feeling of the kite. In addition, the leveled bar ends reduce, through improved leverage, the bar steering force.

2 | Revolutionary Safety

The ergonomically designed revolutionary rotor quick-release enables an intuitive safety release with the least amount of effort. In contrast to traditional systems there is no power required against the flow of the water. At CORE the entire safety system, quick- release and the new leash, work together harmoniously. With this the SENSOR-Bar not only exceeds the highest standards, but also sets new levels in safety.

3 | Unsurpassed Comfort

CORE presents the only 100% self unswivelling bar system. The mid-bar grip ability was optimised with a further development of the line guides and a noticeably thinner bar diameter. The low wear adjuster halves the trimming effort required with the new adjuster. The SENSOR-Bar is suitable for all kite sizes – one bar for all. The SENSOR Pro-Leash and Pro-Loop are available for pro riders.

Conclusion

This is one of the best all-round LW kites we tested during the last few years. Good allround performance in its low & high end.
Well balanced characteristics between low wind performance like early gliding, going upwind, fast steering and always kite pressure with good bar feedback. If the wind picks up you got the right freeride performance like lift, depower, glide and fast maneuvering.
One minus about the new Core, when its gusty, the Riot XR3 loses a bit of its famous stability, still stable but it's possible the kite fly over your head.

Resume, the Core RIOT XR3 is not only a well balanced kite in its characteristics.
This product is built with an eye for costumer use and fabric detail. Well done!

We also tested the Core Riot XR3 19m but we prefer the 17m because of the best overall performance.

Normally I don't like big kites, but the Core XR3 LW range, is really changing the way I feel about light wind riding.

It is so better to be on the water than on the beach wait for wind. The XR3 LW kites always but a smile on my face.

For big kites they really turn fast and relaunch well even when the wind is less than 10knts.

The only thing I don't like about them is that it takes along time to pump-up ;)

If you live in a light wind area, they are a must have in your quiver.

Demo one, you won't be disappointed!

We tested the 19m and 17m beside each other and I like the 17m best. Both need around 8 knots to let you glide, but the performance of the 17m is better. Faster, shorter turning circle and no lack of bar pressure while turning or steering the kite. I think that's important with big kites. If you lose pressure for a second it makes a very big difference in light winds. Above 10 knots the 17m CORE RIOT XR3 LW gets really great. A really controllable all round performer. Good lift, relaunch and playful. For its size a easy to ride LW kite. The only comment I have is that the kite is just a bit less stable as its former series, Core is famous about its stability and they still are very stable, but former series it wasn't possible to pull a Core Kite out of the wind window. With the Riot XR3 it is. But with a reason... you get a more playful performance kite. Sometimes you give a little for a better overall result!
So far my best all round 17+ light wind kite I ever flew.

Tried the 19 and 17m kites with 27m lines in wind under 8 knots. With a North Nugget board (5'5" x 21" x 2 7/16") I could not plain (91 kg). But my mate just could glide a bit (79 kg). The problem is the speed. If you plain you got enough speed to generate more pressure and make a long tack, but if it's a bit gusty or you got the wrong steering timing, you immediately lose speed. Also, if you down loop the kite the 19m really builds a lot of power but on the edge of the wind window it's not enough pressure under the 8 knots and a nugget board. Fast and strong is the kite for sure. Really the big kites have a faster turning speed than a few years ago. So I think longer lines and a race board or a big door. Will do the trick. Pressure enough! Get & hold your riding speed, that's the trick!
