Kite

High Performance Freeride - BigAir - Race kite]

Designers goals (manufacturer text)

The Draft is a high performance freeride kite that generates powerful lift for boosting big airs and long gliding jumps.

It features a state-of-the-art airfoil design that excels at hooked-in riding, upwind performance, and competitive speed. The Draft’s new reduced leading edge taper adds rigidity to the wing tip, moving the axis of rotation closer to the center of the kite, resulting in sharper turning and a more precise bar feel.

It has five struts on the 7, 9, 10.5, and 12 sizes for optimum performance and added control in strong winds & three struts on the 14 and 17 sizes for light wind performance, smooth power delivery, and faster turning.

Features

  • Reduced Leading Edge Taper = Increased rigidity in wing tip for sharper turning
  • Reduced Diameter Struts = Improves low-end power & handling + reduces weight
  • Static Bridle Platform = More precise bar feel + keeps kite stable & moving forward
  • Locked-in Center of Effort/Tow Point Alignment = Stability at different angles of attack to minimize turbulence, enabling consistent forward drive and lift
  • Five Struts on the 7, 9, 10.5, 12 = Control for windward performance in higher winds
  • Three Struts on the 14 & 17 = Lightweight, light wind performance + faster turning

What characteristics set the DRAFT apart from other kites in your line?
First, you’ll notice that the shape is very different. The Draft has a much higher aspect ratio and sweep than other kites in the line. This feature gives the kite higher performance in terms of gliding and upwind ability. It literally “pulls” you upwind, making it an amazing race kite. The Draft also offers a riding experience that none of the other kites in the line offer yet. It’s very easy to make long, glide-like jumps with it even if you’re not a kiting expert. You only need to sheet in and stay sheeted in when in the air in order to glide.

Tested the Naish Draft 14m on the Hydrofoil. High aspect kites on hydrofoils give you that extra up wind experience. Personally I believe the foil give you that into the wind tack. Its nice when the kite is chasing that wind window but I am a freeride type of foiler. Playful and carving turns. So I prefer the more faster steering kites like the Naish Pivot. If you go for big, floaty jumps, the Draft is your kite. Like to play with your kite positioning, go for the Pivot.

Big air kites need to be tested in big air conditions. So I thought here we go. 10.5 m in around 11m/s winds. See how the Draft performs. Well to be short, I needed my 92 kg. The first question that popped into my head was: "How to tame this horse!" This 10.5m Draft likes to accelerate and shoot you away. The lift is enormous explosive. The bar feel was light, so it takes me a bit time to get confident. The De-power range is short, another thing to get used to while you are controlling you hang-time. After a half hour jumping, searching for the right kite positioning while gliding and noticed that down looping is still an option. The session went off. 30% water contact, 70% airborn!

Conclusion: I only tested the Draft in around 11 m/s wind. It's a high performance monster an experienced rider will feel the possibilities
